costa rica san jose hotels

nice cheap hotels San Jose, costa rica?
Hi
Please don’t send me links to travel websites, I’d like your personal favourites in SJ hotels.
I’d also like to stay in one in the countryside, with quick access to the city, so let’s say 20 miles from center tops.
Thanks
I haven’t stayed in that many places and I like comfort too much to go TOO cheap, but here are three that I think offer VERY good levels of comfort and service for very reasonable prices. You can easily shave $20/night off the prices I quote below and find places of similar charm, just perhaps slightly less comfortable, historic, or well situated.
* Hotel Santo Tomas – on the edge of Barrio Amon, a few blocks walk from the Museo de Jade, the Holiday Inn Aurola, etc. The single rooms can be tiny, but doubles are quite comfortable. Attractive courtyard with a small pool, good breakfast. Rates start at $59.
* Hotel Don Carlos – in Barrio Amon, very traditional feeling place with a sense of local artistry and color. Upscale, beautiful property, and with rates starting at just $65, a relative steal of a deal, IMHO.
* Hotel Fleur de Lys – located downtown, a few blocks walk from the National Museum, the Tetro Nacional, etc. Attracts a largely European clientele (not many Americans). Wonderful atmosphere, and their restaurant is very good with free breakfast buffet and excellent Central American cuisine in the evenings. The bar out front is a great place to chill out in the evenings and quite a few guests relax out on the patio with a chilly Imperial. Rates start at $72/night.
And by the way, I *detest* all those hotel booking sites so don’t use ‘em. The links I give you below can get you to the hotel’s OWN web sites so you can get the most accurate direct info and get real contact info.
San Jose can be a fun and interesting place to visit (no matter what the naysayers say).
Have fun!
