In contrast to what the country went through in 2008, this year’s tourism high season in Los Chiles, San Carlos, Sarapiqui and Upala in costa rica has had a promising start that has filled hoteliers, both great and small, with optimism.

The constant arrival of numerous groups of visitors from the United States and Europe in the last two weeks has awakened moderate expectations among hotel owners in the area that better times are still come.

The inhabitants of the border town of Los Chiles in the canton by the same name are witnesses to the intense movement of tourists arriving in the area who are attracted by the beauty of Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge and the ability to navigate on Frío River until it flows into Nicaragua’s San Juan River.

Many boats full of visitors from various nationalities left the dock at Los Chiles and Caño Negro and the neighboring Nicaraguan port of San Carlos this past weekend.

“My impression is that we are at the threshold of a tourism resurgence, which would be for the good of the local economy and the country,” said businessman Oscar Valverde.

Boat owners in Costa Rica noted that another positive sign that the recovery is under way is the fact that there is a greater presence of domestic tourists who were absent last year due to the crisis.

The same positive environment is perceived in La Fortuna, San Carlos and Sarapiqui, where the respective chambers or tourism prepared recreational and cultural activities to try to get tourists to spend more days in the area.

Except for a 13km  stretch of road between Katira in Guatuso and Upala, whose repair will begin soon, roads in Costa Rica’s northern sector are generally in good condition.

“It’s a factor that promotes tourism,” said Juan Acevedo, the Mayor of Upala, who met last Wednesday with engineers from the National Highway Council (CONAVI) to request for greater attention to be paid to the road between his canton and Guatuso.

Acevedo said that there are several rural tourism projects in both cantons that deserve State support and road maintenance.

It is a well-known fact that the only way to achieve greater benefits for the tourism sector is investing in road infrastructure.  However, road infrastructure continues to be a problem in Costa Rica.
